Resolving Student Issues and Complaints

Students enrolled in Wilmington College courses/programs should attempt to resolve any issues or complaints with Wilmington College.

The process for filing complaints to academics can be found in the Wilmington College Catalog (depending on the student’s degree program) in the Academic Appeals section. Additional questions about the process may be directed to wconline@wilmington.edu.

To file a complaint related to discrimination and/or equity, follow the procedure described here.

It is expected that students will fully utilize any or all of Wilmington College’s administrative procedures to address concerns or complaints in as timely a manner as possible. On occasion, however, a student may believe that these administrative procedures have not adequately addressed his/her/their concerns. In those select cases, the following independent resources are available to the student:

  • The Office of the Ohio Attorney General receives and reviews consumer complaints.
  • The Ohio Department of Higher Education reviews academic programming offered in Ohio by independent institutions including Wilmington College and makes recommendations regarding institutional authorization and program approval to the Chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
  • In compliance with Federal Department of Education regulations, out-of-state students may file a complaint with the appropriate authority in their state of residence, by referring to the list of State Agencies.
  • The Higher Learning Commission (“HLC”) is an independent body responsible for the accreditation of programs offered by Wilmington College. Each year, the HLC receives a number of complaints from students or other parties. When a complaint raises issues regarding an institution’s ability to meet accreditation criteria, the HLC will forward a copy of the complaint to the institution and request a formal response. Instructions for filing a complaint with the Commission are available on its website.

Professional Licensure Disclosures and Resources

If you are a student or prospective student interested in an educational program that may lead to professional licensure or certificate, you should be aware of certain policies or information important for your success.

Wilmington College programs that lead to a professional licensure or certification are intended to prepare a student for potential licensure or certification in Ohio. While Wilmington College programs meet the relevant academic requirements for the licensure or certification board/agency in Ohio, they may or may not meet the educational requirements for a licensure or certification in another state.

If you are planning to seek professional licensure or certification outside Ohio, it is important for you to know the specific requirements of the state in which you intend to apply for licensure or certification. If you are considering a program that leads to professional licensure or certification, it is important that you contact the Wilmington College personnel with direct oversight of the academic program you are interested in for licensure and certification requirements.

For these purposes, states include the District of Columbia and the US protectorates, as defined in 34 CFR §600.2. Wilmington College makes every effort to ensure information about educational requirements for licensure or certification is current; however, state requirements may change. Separate from educational requirements, state licensure boards may require applicants to complete professional examinations, background checks, years of professional experience, specialized exams, training, etc.

If you are planning to pursue professional licensure or certification in a state other than Ohio, it is strongly recommended that you contact the appropriate licensing entity in that state to seek information and guidance regarding licensure or certification requirements before beginning an academic program.

State Authorization for Out-of-Ohio Students

Wilmington College has been approved to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA).

State Authorization regulations determine if Wilmington College is permitted to offer our educational programs to students outside of Ohio. These regulations may affect you if:

  • You are located outside of Ohio and are interested in taking Wilmington College online courses.
  • You are a Wilmington College student who wishes to participate in an internship, field experience, or clinical experience outside of Ohio.
  • You are a Wilmington College student and you move out of Ohio in the middle of a semester but with to complete your program.

Regulations differ from state to state, as do the activities that Wilmington College is able to offer to students located in another state.
