State Authorization and Professional Licensure

National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA)

Wilmington College is approved by the Ohio Department of Education to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement. For additional information, visit the online resources page.

The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) establishes a state-level reciprocity process that will support the nation in its efforts to increase the educational attainment of its people by making state authorization:

  • more efficient, effective, and uniform in regard to necessary and reasonable standards of practice that could span states;
  • more effective in dealing with quality and integrity issues that have arisen in some online/ distance education offerings; and
  • less costly for states and institutions and, thereby, the students they serve.

State Authorization

State authorization allows accredited colleges and universities to offer academic programs to students nationwide. Wilmington College makes every effort to ensure licensure information is current; however, licensure regulations are frequently revised.

Wilmington College is approved to offer licensure degree programs in the state of Ohio, which may also lead to license reciprocity from state-to-state. This includes all types of classroom delivery such as face-to-face, online, and hybrid programs. If you are considering a licensure program, we highly recommend that you contact the appropriate licensing agency in your state, or the state in which you plan to practice, to seek information and additional guidance before beginning the program.

Relocation

Should a student relocate during the course of a program to another state, it may impact the student's ability to remain in the program, meet the state licensure requirements, and/or continue to receive financial aid funding. Prior to considering relocation, please contact your program to discuss authorization and licensure eligibility requirements.

International Students

Prior to enrolling in any program at Wilmington College, prospective students living and/or working outside of the United States should confirm with the appropriate certifying agency whether successful completion of any degree program at Wilmington College will meet the credentialing requirements of the country in which they intend to seek employment.

Professional Licensure Requirements

The curriculum for programs customarily leading to licensure at Wilmington College have been designed to meet the licensure/certification requirements in Ohio as well as preparing students to apply for licensure exams in the State of Ohio. The licensure boards in each state are responsible for establishing the requirements for licensure/certification for their state. Students who intend to return or move to any state other than Ohio need to review the professional licensure disclosures pertaining to their program and consult with the state professional licensing board. The state professional licensing boards make the ultimate decision as to whether or not an individual will be eligible for licensure based on the rules and regulations in place at the time the individual submits their application for licensure.

Wilmington College shall not be held liable if the student is unable to qualify for licensure or certification in any jurisdiction or cannot obtain a practicum/internship location since all situations are unique and requirements may change.

State Authorization List By Program

The list below indicates, to the best of our knowledge, whether or not the licensure programs we offer meet educational requirements in each state. Links to state professional associations, or licensing authorities, are provided in the list and we urge you to seek guidance from the appropriate agency in your state.

Educational requirements for state licensure are subject to change.

Accounting

In all state and non-state jurisdictions, unless otherwise noted, an undergraduate accounting degree from Wilmington College by itself DOES NOT meet the 150 semester hours of college credit required for Licensure, but may meet the State Board Education Requirements for sitting the Examination. Please see the State Board’s website for specific regulations regarding both the examination and licensure.

Licensing Board Notes: All 55 licensing jurisdictions (the 50 states plus 5 non-state jurisdictions) require 150 semester hours of college credit for Licensure. Specific Education and Experience requirements are determined by each jurisdiction's Board of Accountancy. While the CPA exam is uniform across all jurisdictions, individual jurisdictions establish their own requirements to sit for the exam and obtain licensure. Many states provide mobility to allow CPAs to work across jurisdictional boundaries without requiring an additional license. Wilmington College has not made a determination regarding whether the program meets licensure requirements in the American Samoa or Northern Mariana Islands.

The Accounting program at Wilmington College is offered both in-person and fully online.
