Daniel McCamish is part of the inaugural cohort of the Master of Organizational Leadership at Wilmington College Cincinnati and may be one of the most positive and optimistic people you will ever meet.
Currently serving as the Director of Institutional Effectiveness at Wilmington College, Daniel mines all sorts of relevant data that informs decision-making at the college. There isn’t a spreadsheet he can’t create and his ability to present data in an understandable manner is an enviable talent. Daniel continually asks himself how he can best contribute to the efficiencies and effectiveness of Wilmington College.
When asked why he decided to pursue a graduate degree in Organization Leadership, Daniel said, “Since working in education for over a decade, I have been keeping my eyes open for a program that relates to my job and speaks to my interests.” After reviewing the Master of Organizational Leadership curriculum, he decided this program clearly aligned with his personal and professional goals.
Born and raised in Hollister, CA, Daniel, at the age of 18, decided to spread his entrepreneurial wings by starting a commercial and residential window cleaning business. This nearly eight-year venture honed his skills in market analysis, strategic planning, sales, budgeting, networking, negotiation, and as many entrepreneurs can relate to, resilience. During that time, he experimented with community college courses but did not commit to a four-year degree path until a few years later.
After moving between eastern and western parts of the United States, he eventually graduated from UNC Asheville with a math major and a minor in religious studies. He explored a few different career paths before landing in higher education. From teaching in the K-12 school system, working as an independent contractor, maintaining the books for various small businesses and legal firms, serving as a real estate paralegal, to doing research for the Attorney General’s office in Washington D.C., Daniel experienced a variety of working environments after earning his bachelor’s degree.
He entered higher education as a tutor and worked part-time at a university library before being hired in the Registrar’s Office at Chowan University, eventually moving into the Coordinator for Institutional Assessment position before arriving at Wilmington College.
Daniel says, “The MOL program has encouraged me to assess the degree to which I take time to understand others and appreciate their perspective. I have become more observant of how others behave and what motivates them in the workplace.”
Surprisingly, Daniel said that writing at the graduate level has unveiled writing strengths he didn’t realize he had. This revelation has improved his email communication and ability to write reports for his work.
Daniel is doing his Immersive Learning Experience for the program with Sugartree Ministries where he is working on a few key strategic initiatives that will further the mission of the non-profit organization. The process improvement strategies he has gained through the Master of Organizational Leadership classes are proving valuable in his work with the organization.
In addition, he is exploring potential involvement with Telos, an organization on a mission to form communities of American peacemakers across lines of difference and equip them to help reconcile seemingly intractable conflicts at home and abroad. His interest with this organization aligns with the conflict theory and conflict tools courses included in the Organizational Transformation track that he will be completing in the fall of 2022.
Daniel has no immediate plans after earning his degree but believes it will enhance the value he brings to the organizations of which he is a part.
As a non-traditional student with a wealth of experience in a variety of positions Daniel says, “You’re never too old to better yourself and keep growing…as long as you’re alive.” This attitude is exactly what makes him such a valuable asset to the Master of Organizational Leadership program. The positivity, humor, and insight he brings to the program keeps the classroom conversations relevant and the learning environment lively.
