Wilmington College’s exercise science program proved once again that it offers one of the most hands-on learning experiences at WC. Among other activities this semester, students engaged in mock interviews and an experiential spine boarding skills session.
The exercise science students prepared and dressed in appropriate attire for the mock interviews, in which they spent seven to 10 minutes meeting with human resources and hiring managers from area businesses involved with exercise science.
Also, students in the Exercise Science Emergency Care course, instructed by Jennifer Walker, associate professor of exercise science, learned spine boarding skills from two of WC's certified athletic trainers, Brian Dykhuizen and Robert Oates. The group met at the Center for Sport Sciences Indoor Turf Field for a short review of head, neck and spine injuries, followed by practice sessions to facilitate the students’ hands-on experience.

Health and fitness constitute a major industry in the United States. WC’s exercise science major is designed to prepare and train students for leadership positions within the fields of sports, recreation, physical fitness and allied health. The major in exercise science can open doors to exciting careers in Ohio and beyond.
The College offers both an exercise science major and a minor, with major concentrations in allied health and sport nutrition. The Allied Health concentration is geared toward those seeking advanced degrees in such areas as physical therapy, physician’s assistant and chiropractic medicine. The sport nutrition concentration caters to those seeking career paths in wellness coordination, nutrition education or food product development.
When students major in the academically rigorous exercise science program, they will have the flexibility to combine their curriculum with WC’s popular coaching minor.
