Technical Production and Design Certificate

Wilmington College's Technical Production and Design Certificate is crafted for students interested in entering the fields of theatrical design or theatrical technology. The goal of the certificate is to allow students to focus on the areas of production and design within their existing Theatre major/minor, or in addition to another major/minor. Students will gain knowledge in the realm of theatre with more flexibility and less time commitment than adding a major/minor. Students will sharpen their skills and artistry in scenery, lighting, makeup, audio, costuming, properties, projections, and special effects. This certificate also broadens the technical components to areas outside of the Theatre major/minor to include courses in art and communication arts, adding to the students’ understanding of design and other areas of technology.

Upon successful completion of the certificate, students will be able to:

• Understand the roles and responsibilities of various technicians and designers within a production team. 
• Analyze script or source material in an organized way to evaluate the technical/design needs 
• Create a fully functional design from concept to execution in at least one technical/design area. 
• Illustrate an understanding of the elements of design and principles of design in their work. 
• Demonstrate tangible skills in at least two technical production/design areas (makeup, costuming, lighting, sound, scenery, projection, etc.) 

Requirements include: 

20 credit-hours of coursework 
A grade of C or better in each course 
Final portfolio presentation
