From Wilmington to the World Stage
Megan Canfield, Class of 2016, is a tireless advocate for equity and empowerment—locally and globally. She currently serves as a foreign affairs officer in the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues at the U.S. Department of State, where she helps shape economic policy and gender equality initiatives around the world. Megan serves as deputy director for three Women’s Business Councils in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, amplifying women’s voices in business and policy.
Before joining the State Department, Megan worked with USAID, focusing on data analytics, strategic communications, and policy development. Her path in public service began at the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), where she co-edited the Pitt Policy Journal and led a social equity working group. Megan earned her master’s degree there, receiving both an Alumni Fellowship and funding for a Washington, DC internship that helped launch her career.
Her foundation was built at Wilmington College, where she double-majored in political science and psychology. As a student, she was widely recognized for her leadership and service, receiving the Robert E. Lucas Award for Outstanding Leadership and the Charles J. Ping Student Community Service Award.
Megan’s purpose is rooted in action and empathy. Whether she’s working to advance gender equity or hosting a dinner for friends, she leads with heart. She believes spring is the most inspiring season, and few things rival a fresh cup of coffee or a well-loved book shared with her dog by her side.
