Antigone, written by the ancient Greek tragedian Sophocles (497-405 B.C.), tells the story of a young woman who, despite the risks involved, stands up for what she believes is right. After a bloody war for the city of Thebes, Antigone is forced to choose between honoring one of her fallen brothers with a proper burial or following the edict that he shall remain unburied. The new king, Creon, has decreed that mourning or providing a burial for the brother is punishable by death. Antigone must decide if she will risk it all to honor the dead or stay silent against the unjust law. As the story unfolds, King Creon's arrogance and unwillingness to listen to the opinions of others has dire consequences for his family and his city.
