Matzke, an adjunct member of Wilmington College’s music faculty, commissioned seven composers to write seven new pieces of music for violin and piano. These will be performed for the first time publicly this weekend at New York City’s Cell Theater as part of the TriBeCa New Music Festival.
“I am very excited about this concert because each composer wrote his or her piece ‘on behalf’ of something or someone,” she said in citing the examples of William R. Ayers writing on behalf of his two grandmothers, while Molly Joyce composed on behalf of physical disability and Nate May wrote is on behalf of Earth's future residents.
Matzke will be performing the pieces at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati on March 22. This concert also will feature pieces of non-musical art that were created in response to the idea of speaking "on behalf" (by a poet, a dancer, an actor, a photographer and a sculptor).
“I'd like to extend a special invitation to WC faculty, staff, and students to attend,” she added.
Additional information and tickets for the project and both concerts are available here.
