The Natural Sciences Area Awards Special Scholarships

13 Students Receive Scholarships in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics Wilmington College awarded more than $50,000 in special scholarships to 13 students studying in the mathematics, chemistry and biology fields. The Natural Sciences Area presented scholarships for the 2019-20 academic year based upon faculty member recommendations of qualified students. These students exemplify dedication, enthusiasm and high academic performance within their respective disciplines. Area Coordinator Dr. Russell Kincaid, professor of mathematics, praised these talented students in the natural sciences and commended their hard work and being worthy of these special scholarships. "They epitomize what those of us in higher education are seeking in our students," he said, noting that each scholarship award-winner has displayed "tremendous personal commitment" to their attainment of higher education. "Each has met his or her own particular academic challenges and has shown the perseverance necessary to succeed." The Mathematics Dept. presented Olivia Wendel, a senior from Sardinia majoring in mathematics and political science, with the Martha Haines Scholarship and Evan Whittaker, a sophomore from Grove City majoring in mathematics and education, with the Lawrence and Ruby Adamson Scholarship. The Chemistry Dept. awarded the Orville Rogers Scholarship to three students: Abigail Lozano, a junior from Loveland majoring in chemistry; Colton Williams, a junior from New Lebanon majoring in life science and chemistry; and Alora Pratt, a senior from Lynchburg majoring in life science and chemistry. Also, Williams received the Jack Persinger Memorial Scholarship while Abby Hite, a senior from Baltimore majoring in chemistry, was awarded the Jack Persinger Memorial Scholarship, D. Sheley and F.L. Laymon Scholarship and the Ruth Esther Fisher-Durham Scholarship. The Biology Dept. nominated seven students for special honors. The Jack Persinger Memorial Scholarship was awarded to: Darron Crump, a junior from Redford, Mich., majoring in biology and psychology; Ashleigh Harless, a senior from Hillsboro majoring in exercise science; Jack Ferguson, a senior from Waynesville majoring in life science and religion/philosophy; and Margaret Hover, a junior from Grove City majoring in environmental science. In addition, Hover received the Nelson Melampy Scholarship and John W. Robinson Scholarship, while Morgan Loomis, a junior from Xenia majoring in biology, also received the John W. Robinson Scholarship. Ruth Esther Fisher-Durham Scholarships also were awarded to Elena Suggs, a senior from Cincinnati majoring in environmental science, and Teiara Saling, a senior from Cumberland majoring in life science.
