The Peace Resource Center’s 50th anniversary observance continues with a public screening of the documentary film, Silent Fallout, on Tuesday (Nov. 11) from 7 to 8:15 p.m., in Room 148 of Wilmington College’s Center for the Sciences & Agriculture. The 2023 film documents the fight for justice regarding nuclear radiation and testing in the United States during the Cold War.
Director Hideaki Ito noted that, 60 years ago, women in the United States took “bold action to protect their children from radiation, preventing catastrophic radioactive contamination across the continental U.S. Had the 828 underground nuclear tests continued above ground, the country could have become an uninhabitable zone.”
The director described the women’s efforts as nothing short of miraculous. “The true goal of every individual and nation should not be national interest or economic growth — it is to safeguard the health and lives of our children,” he added. “In this mission, there are no racial barriers or borderlines.”
PRC Director Tanya Maus said the film is especially relevant in light of the American government’s stated intention recently to begin nuclear testing again.
