Office of Campus Ministry to Open Winter Lecture Series Jan. 19

James Newby Will Speak on Spiritual Crisis The Office of Campus Ministry is hosting a winter speaker series highlighting various aspects of Quakers’ reach throughout society. (PICTURED) The T. Canby Jones Meetinghouse is part of the Meriam R. Hare Quaker Heritage Center. The series opens Thursday (Jan. 19) with a 6:30 p.m. lecture by James R. Newby, minister and public Friend with Cincinnati Friends Meeting. A 30-minute social period, beginning at 6 p.m. in T. Canby Jones Meetinghouse in Meriam R. Hare Quaker Heritage Center, will precede his presentation. Childcare will be available. Newby’s topic is “A Quaker Response to the Spiritual Crisis of Our Time.” He has served as a minister among Friends in Nebraska, Ohio and North Carolina. A former editor of Quaker Life magazine, he served on the faculty of Earlham School of Religion for 10 years. Newby’s most recent books include Sacred Chaos: One Man’s Spiritual Journey Through Pain and Loss and Shining Out and Shining In: The Biography of Tom Tipton. Subsequent lectures will feature Dr. Paul Moke, professor of political science and criminal justice at WC, speaking Feb. 22 on “Clarence Pickett and the American Friends Service Committee in the Appalachian Coalfields.” He has been studying the work of Pickett and the AFSC’s work in the coalfields. Also, at a to-be-announced date, David Brindle, retired Friends pastor and associate secretary of the London office of Friends World Consultation Committee, will share personal stories from his experiences with international Quakers.
