'Sojourner Truth: A One Woman Show' Depicts Important Figure in American History
Kathryn Woods will recreate the life of famous abolitionist, women’s rights advocate and escaped slave Sojourner Truth at Wilmington College Tuesday (Jan. 12), at 7:30 p.m., in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre.
“Sojourner Truth: A One Woman Show” depicts one of the most significant figures in American history. Truth (1797-1883) was sold into slavery in New York as Isabella Baumfree and was enslaved for 29 years before escaping.
The program joins Truth near the end of her life recalling her early days as an slaved person, details of her relationship with God and poignant stories of her days walking through this land in an effort to free her people. Woods uses Truth’s own words and the spiritual music she may have sung in memorializing this inspiring woman.
Woods has acted in Boston for many years and her credits include performances with Theatreworks,People’s Theatre, The Wheelock Family Theatre and the Underground Railway Theatre. She also has performed internationally in Moscow and Edinburgh.
