Homecoming Celebration Set for Oct. 13-14

Annual Rite Chock Full of Activities Autumn’s changing colors, a crispness in the air and alumni returning to their alma mater are all harbingers of the annual rite of homecoming at Wilmington College. PICTURED: Coastal Club will perform between noon and 2 p.m. on Collett Mall Facing Elm Street. This year’s event will be Oct. 13 and 14, and will again be combined with Alumni Reunion Weekend. The public is invited to attend all Homecoming festivities. Only the football game and Athletic Hall of Fame Luncheon have an admission charge. Homecoming kicks off for the campus community Thursday (Oct. 12) with the annual Mud Volleyball Tournament held on the lower field near Lytle Creek. For early Homecoming revelers, the band Quintonix featuring Sam the Sam will perform Friday, at 9:09 p.m., in the Top of Pyle, Saturday’s Homecoming activities start bright and early with the alumni swim meet at 9:30 a.m. at the natatorium, followed at 10 a.m. with the 1980s tailgate in the Center for the Sciences & Agriculture (CSA) parking lot. Greek bed races are at 10:30 a.m. on Elm St., The Athletic Hall of Fame Luncheon begins at 10:30 a.m. in honor of 2017 inductees Nicole Woods Hurley ’02, Steve Magoteaux ’75, Alex Van der Sluijs ’07, Mike Wallace and Ashley Johnson Wulf ’07. Reservations are required. The Food Truck Rally on Elm St. will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and feature Dubtown Smokers, DP Grill and WC’s own Corey Cockerill’s Fertile Grounds Coffee. Concurrently, from noon through the 2 p.m. football kickoff, the band, Coastal Club, will perform on the campus mall facing Elm St. Also, during that time, the CSA parking lot has been set aside for tailgating and pumpkin painting will be held on the mall. Kickoff for the Fightin’ Quakers versus Marietta matchup is 2 p.m. with halftime festivities including the announcement of the Homecoming court and king and queen crowning, as well as the Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Sports are always a focal point at Homecoming and this year’s is jam-packed starting Friday with the annual Jenna Strong Fall Cross Country Classic (women’s race at 4:30 p.m. and men’s at 5:15 p.m.) at the lower fields. On Saturday, in addition to the football game, the men’s soccer team will take on Marietta with a 7 p.m. kick-off. Also, this year’s “Hermann Madness” event introducing the 2017-18 basketball teams will be from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., in Hermann Court’s Fred Raizk Arena. Special receptions and reunions will be held for Activities Programming Board alumni Friday, at 8 p.m., at the APB Office; CBS/MSU/BSI alumni, Saturday, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Boyd Cultural Arts Center lobby; the 2007 to 2017 alumni cluster, Saturday, at 5:30 p.m., at Generations Pizzeria; and the Residence Life alumni, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., in the McCoy Room of Kelly Center. Also, many Greek organizations will be holding reunions.
