Winners in the Cliff Hardie Literary Analysis Essay Competition were: Upper Division — Lydi Shelton, first place, for "A Queen Worthy of her Crown"; and Shelby Kirby, second place, "Machinery as Oppressive Symbol in Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Lower Division — Alfie Harris, first place, "Explication of 'Hold Your Hands' by Robert Southey"; and Hope Florea, second place, "The Symbolism of Eyes in As I Lay Dying."
The Cliff Hardie Literary Analysis Essay Competition and Award are named in honor and memory of Dr. Clifford Hardie, a professor of English who taught at WC from 1960 through 1996. The cash prizes are funded by WC alumnus Alan Frankel, who praised his friend and former professor for "opening especially enlightening avenues for his creativity" when he attended WC in the mid-1960s.
