Wilmington College’s Rocket League Esports Team traveled to Lisle, IL, to compete in the Midwest Battleground, an event that brought together high school and collegiate esports programs from across the region. It provided, in the words of Coach Tyler Steckler, “an outstanding opportunity for our students to compete, network and represent Wilmington College on a larger stage.”

The Midwest Battleground hosted the Illinois High School Esports Association State Tournament alongside collegiate competitions in Rocket League, VALORANT, Overwatch and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This year’s event featured 31 Illinois high schools, with organizers expecting continued growth in future years. Steckler noted that, in addition to competition, the weekend included a college and university recruitment fair, educational workshops, collegiate panels and networking opportunities for students.

The College was represented by Adam Moneypenny, Alex Powers, Braylon Dunn and Zach Sizemore. “Our students competed at a high level while also building connections with other programs and engaging with the broader esports community,” Steckler added. “We are incredibly proud of how they represented Wilmington College throughout the weekend. Opportunities like this are made possible through the continued support of our campus community and donors.” Indeed, the trip was funded utilizing money raised through Giving Tuesday. “We are truly grateful for the investment in our esports program and the meaningful experiences it provides for our students. We look forward to attending again in future years.”
