Event Served to Remind Campus of Unique WC Facility Just Down the Street
With the Equine Center a mile down the road from main campus, Wilmington College’s equine studies program often falls prey to the out-of-sight, out-of-mind axiom.
(PICTURED) Michael Goldcamp, associate professor of chemistry, balances an egg on a spoon while riding a horse in one of the competitions held featuring faculty and staff on horses at the Equine Center.
But no longer, as two dozen faculty and staff members and some family members spent an evening surrounded by all things horses April 13.
The equine students treated them to dinner — featuring a bevy of desserts including cut-out cookies depicting horses and carrots — followed by a hands-on experience in the center’s indoor arena that gave participants an opportunity to get up close and personal with the animal about which Ronald Reagan said, “There’s nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse.”
For those that preferred to keep their feet on terra firma, a stick horse race opened the competition featuring the winning team of Mark Denniston, director of the Work Program and International Partnerships, and Debbie Triance, Student One Stop representative.
In the horse walk event, Bonnie Erwin, assistant professor of English, accumulated the most style points and placed first followed by Stephen Potthoff, associate professor of religion and philosophy; Liz Haynes, assistant professor of mathematics; Luis Sierra, assistant professor of history; and Michael Goldcamp, associate professor of chemistry.
The walk-trot class was next, with Debbie Triance winning the event, followed by Tanya Maus, director of the Peace Resource Center; Russell Kincaid, associate professor of mathematics; and Edward Agran, professor of history.
In the supreme test of balance, coordination and skills with eating utensils and breakfast food, Paula Stewart, assistant swim coach and director of Quaker Fit, outlasted the rest of the field in the egg-and-spoon competition. The program concluded with pony rides for children of faculty and staff members.
Wilmington College offers a major in equine business management and a minor in equine studies. It also has an intercollegiate equestrian team that competes as a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, as addition to, new this year, an equine judging team.
