Wilmington College has another national champion after a slew of them in track and field in recent years. Senior Maegan Pearson won the Open Horsemanship title at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Nationals on May 1. The soon-to-be-graduate will leave the College as its most accomplished equestrian with three consecutive appearances at Nationals and, now, possessing the jewel in the crown as National Champion.

Pearson is an equine business management and agribusiness major from Laurel, IN. She entered the IHSA Nationals, held at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, NC, as both the Regional and Semi-Nationals High Point Rider and champion in Open Horsemanship.

Prior to the competition, Pearson said, “I’m just going to ride and have fun — one last hurrah. It’s rewarding to see all my hard work pay off. I’m going into Nationals like it’s just another horse show for me — I try not to overcomplicate it. I ride every day. You go with what you know and just ride.”

Obviously, her strategy paid off.
