College to Install New ‘Blue Light’ Emergency Phones

WC Committed to Offering a Safe Campus Environment Our students' safety and security are of paramount importance at Wilmington College. The institution constantly reviews its protocols to ensure it is providing students with a safe campus environment. PICTURED: The College will install the 9-foot high model featuring solar recharging as pictured in the equipment second from the left. This fall, the College will be installing five new "Blue Light" phones at strategic locations throughout the campus. The nine-foot high towers feature a blue beacon strobe for easy visibility and accommodate persons making calls to Campus Safety if they witness an emergency or find themselves in a threatening situation. The solar-powered phones will be placed throughout the campus in locations convenient for students, faculty and staff to access if needed. This new measure complements the College's 24/7 Campus Safety staff, as well as outdoor lighting and security cameras. Student residence halls have been accessible only with residents' ID cards for many years. Soon, the campus buildings open to the College community will automatically lock their doors at 6 p.m. and only be accessible to students, faculty and staff with ID cards. An exception is game nights when public events are held on campus such as sports competitions, lectures and other activities open to the general public. With October here, winter is right around the corner. Please be aware of the College's protocol for weather delays and closures. If inclement weather forces the closure of the physical campus, students and other members of the campus community will be notified via the College Emergency Notification System. Students can expect calls and text messages to their cell phones and emails to their College account ideally by 6 a.m. Also, information will be provided on the College's home page at <www.wilmington.edu>. Please note that traditional "snow days" are a thing of the past and classes will be held virtually if the campus closes and in-person classes are canceled.
