Also, Quaker Heritage Center to Open New Exhibit Prior to MLK Event
Wilmington College’s annual community program honoring the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will offer a diverse menu of entertainment Monday, (Jan. 18), at 7:30 p.m., in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre.
The evening also will feature the opening of the Quaker Heritage Center’s exhibit, “The Peace Corps: 50 Years of Service,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Rather than featuring a keynote speaker, this year’s MLK event will include a number of brief reflections from College students and staff members, along with a period of reflective silence designed to facilitate spontaneous reflection from audience members moved to share thoughts about MLK’s legacy.
Music will continue as a major component of the program as the Wilmington College Chorale will join Bible Missionary Baptist Church’s choir and praise team in song. Also, WC freshman Alexis Davis and Wilmington community member Randy Zimmerman will offer musical selections, and WC’s new a capella ensemble, Nothing But Trouble (NBT), will make its performance debut.
Also, winners of the MLK Day Essay Contest will be announced from both the College and Clinton County schools.
In addition, WC’s Center for Service and Civic Engagement will be collecting donations of toiletries to be included in care packages known as “Socks of Love” for men and “Blessing Bags” for women, which will be distributed at the local Women’s Shelter and Men’s Overnight Shelter.
Needed items include: Band-Aids, hand-warmers, wash cloths, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, small packs of baby wipes, hand sanitizers (alcohol-free), combs, lip balm, inexpensive gloves, Ziploc bags (gallon size), new men’s socks, new/gently used bras, female sanitary items, small hand lotions, small packages of laundry soap and small containers of shampoo/conditioner.
