Summer Program Designed to Immerse High School Students in College Experience
Area high school students considering higher education will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in a “real college experience” June 12 through 14 at the seventh annual ACCESS college prep program at Wilmington College.
ACCESS (Academic College Campus Experience for Student Success) is a campus experience “in its truest sense,” according to Chip Murdock, WC’s director of service and civic engagement and ACCESS director. The College and the Warren County Educational Service Center are co-sponsoring the experience.
“This three-day program allows current high school students the opportunity to not only gain college preparatory skills but also immerse themselves in a real college experience,” Murdock said, noting that students will participate in personality and learning styles testing, gain valuable insight towards success in college, take an ACT prep class, explore future career goals and opportunities, and much more.
Hosted on Wilmington College’s campus, ACCESS participants will spend a night in campus housing, learn about the College’s facilities and engage with current WC students, as well as faculty and staff each day.
“ACCESS offers both in-class and extracurricular, hands-on activities, such as working with different academic areas, volunteer service and recreational activities,” Murdock added. After completion of this program, high school students will have a “better understanding of their strengths and areas for improvement” as they head down their path towards college and a career.
The cost is $75 per scholar and includes meals, lodging, materials and, as Murdock noted, “a few surprises.” Space is limited so interested students are encouraged to register soon at www.wilmington.edu/academics/access. Financial assistance is available in special circumstances and local residents have commuter options.
