College to Host Program on Holiday Traditions

Winter Holiday Celebration Runs Gamut from Popular to Obscure Traditions December is a time in which many persons of various faiths, ethnic backgrounds and nationalities observe holidays and special traditions. At last year's Winter Holiday Celebration, Ellen Simkin spoke about the Jewish holiday Hanukkah at the Holiday Celebrations Around the World program in December. Other holiday traditions shared in both personal and traditional ways were Christmas, Advent, Guy Fawkes Day, Kwanzaa, Epiphany, New Year’s Eve/Day and the Hindu festival of lights known as Diwali. Wilmington College is hosting its Winter Holiday Celebration program highlighting some of these religious, cultural and secular events Dec. 1, at 7 p.m., in the McCoy Room of Kelly Center. While Christmas is the central focus for most Americans, many also observe Christian Advent, the Jewish tradition of Chanukah and the now 50-year-old custom of observing Kwanzaa, among others. Also, Christmas is observed with traditions unique to various nationalities, which will be shared by some of the College’s international students. The program is designed to offer a chance in which to learn about the holiday season from a number of perspectives. Event sponsors include the WC International Club, Office of Multicultural Affairs and Office of Campus Ministry.
