Trailblazing Stephen Sondheim Production Show Dates in Mid-July
Wilmington College-Community Summer Theatre will produce Stephen Sondheim’s Company, the Musical, for four shows in July.
Auditions for what is regarded as a “trailblazer of the dark comedy, modern- musical genre” will be held May 28 and 29, at 7:15 p.m., with callbacks, if necessary, May 30, at 7:15 p.m., in Wilmington College’s Hugh G. Heiland Theatre, located in Boyd Cultural Arts Center.
Wynn Alexander, professor of theatre, will direct the production, with Matt Spradlin providing music direction and Cole Haugh the choreography. Show dates are July 18, 19, 20, at 7:30 p.m., and July 21, at 2:30 p.m.
Auditions are open to anyone age 18 and over, and will be held in workshop style with music, choreography and cold readings taught during the sessions. Those interested are encouraged to attend as many of the sessions as possible. More information on both auditions and the production is available by contacting Alexander at WC, 937.481.2472, or via email at wynn_alexander@wilmington.edu.
Company, with music by Sondheim and book by George Furth, takes place on the night of Bobby’s all-important “30-something” birthday. Bobby, a long confirmed single, contemplates what it means to be alone. Over the course of a series of remembered dinners, drinks and even a wedding, friends explain the pros and cons of taking on a spouse. Bobby is forced to question “the tick-tock” of what it means to be unmarried. Sondheim's Company is largely regarded as a trailblazer of the dark-comedy, modern-musical genre, and features a brilliantly brisk and energetic score containing many of the composer's best-known songs.
Tickets, which are $15, will go on sale June 3 at the Theatre Box Office. At that time, reservations can be made by calling 937.481.2267 weekdays, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.
