Paintings Feature Seascapes, Landscapes and Still Life
Jean Gravlin’s early paintings, following her student days at Wilmington College, depict sailing scenes off Long Island, New York. She was attracted to the “action and power” exhibited as the sailing vessels dotted the horizon on beautiful, blue-sky days.

Gravlin, a 1970 graduate residing in Dayton, will present an exhibit of her paintings Jan. 26 through March 3 in Harcum Art Gallery. A campus opening is planned for Jan. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m., while the artist’s reception will be Jan. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend both of the opening events.
Normal gallery hours are weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by special arrangement coordinated by gallery curator Hal Shunk, professor of art.
Gravlin fondly recalls weekends sailing off Long Island with her husband, Tom, in his parents’ 33-foot sloop. She became part of the area’s community of artists and participated with friends in private shows on Long Island and several outdoor shows with the Huntington Art League.
Also, she exhibited and sold her work at Wilkes Gallery in Northport, NY, and also in the Cork Room at Lincoln Center in New York City. After her sailing days, she and Tom moved a number of times and no longer lived close to the seashore, which resulted in Gravlin’s subject matter evolving to feature landscapes and still life, including images from memories of growing up in Ohio.
