State Science Day was established in the state of Ohio in 1949 and has been held annually every year since then. The Ohio Academy of Science hosts this event, which is a competition among young science students ranging from grades 5 through 12. Over the years, 17 districts have been established in the state so that students from different regions of the state can qualify for the state competition. District 17 includes Adams, Brown, Clinton, Fayette, and Highland Counties in southwestern Ohio. The competition in District 17 is co-hosted by Wilmington College and Southern State Community College at Southern State’s Central Campus in Hillsboro.
Students from these counties, who have competed in a local science fair and have been scored at a “superior” level, are qualified to compete at District 17 Science Day. Students who receive a score of “superior” at District 17 Science Day in March qualify to compete at the state competition in May.
In addition to student registration, any individuals wishing to volunteer at District 17 Science Day as a judge or in any other capacity may register at the same link above.
Student displays for district science day should conform to the guidelines for state science day. Specifically excluded items are detailed here.
Student displays should include only their research paper, their lab notebook, and their display board.
Students who are legal full-time residents of one of the District 17 counties and who attend schools that do not have a local science fair or academic fair, yet wish to compete at the District 17 Science Day, should communicate with the District 17 Science Day Coordinator through the registration web page.
Students who will reach age 21 on or before the event date are not eligible to participate.

Project ideas include, but are not limited to: behavioral science, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, earth/space sciences, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, medicine and health, microbiology, physics, and zoology.
