The Harper and the Minstrel to Present an Evening of Early Music at WC

Massachusetts Musical Duo Has Been Performing at the Renaissance Festival A husband-wife duo performing at the Renaissance Festival will share their love for Renaissance dance and romance with a presentation of early music at Wilmington College Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m., in Kelly Center. PICTURED: Jay Michaels The event features Jay and Abby Michaels of Massachusetts, who are known as “The Harper and the Minstrel.” WC’s Department of Music is sponsoring the concert, which is free and open to the public. They sing and both play an array of traditional instruments ranging from a wire-strung harp, recorders, viola da gamba and hammered dulcimer to several guitars, flutes, Greek aulos, penny whistles and bowed psaltery. The concert will feature Medieval tunes, Renaissance dance music and Renaissance-era love songs sung in Ladino, Galician, Italian, French and English. The couple has been performing early music throughout the country since 2005. In the past year, they have appeared at the Boston Early Music Festival, New England Folk Festival, Kansas City Renaissance Faire and Massachusetts Renaissance Festival, while their music has been featured in such television shows as Nashville and Parenthood and in the film, How to Be a Latin Lover. The Harper and the Minstrel are performing at the Renaissance Festival in Waynesville on weekends through Oct. 6.
