Longtime History Professor Died in 2019 at 96 Years of Age
Coinciding with the International Day of Peace, the Meriam R. Hare Quaker Heritage Center at Wilmington College is opening an exhibit highlighting the late Emeritus Professor Larry Gara's life and work for peace and social justice.

The exhibit, titled "Follow the Principles: The Path of a Nonviolent War Resister — Larry Gara (1922-2019)," will open Sept. 21 with a reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibit, which runs through Dec. 14, is available for public viewing weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The QHC is located in the Boyd Cultural Arts Center.
Gara served on the College history faculty for 40 years, from 1962 to 2002. A Quaker, he was a committed pacifist and conscientious objector who lived his life dedicated to the core principles of peace and social justice, according to Dr. Tanya Maus, director of the QHC and Peace Resource Center. She noted the exhibit has been carefully researched and planned by the QHC's student staff.
"We were fortunate to have the support of family members in constructing the exhibit," she said. "This exhibit also will complement this year's Westheimer Peace Symposium (Oct. 5). The theme is nonviolence and social justice."
