Michael Smith: ‘I’ve Learned, Evolved and Developed from Opportunities I Had at WC’

SENIOR SALUTES Honor Wilmington College’s Graduating Seniors 2020 graduate Michael Smith recalls from his first day at Wilmington College student leaders encouraging him to get involved on campus as a means for meeting friends, developing leadership abilities and learning about oneself. Michael embraced that sentiment that day and never looked back. PICTURED: Michael Smith (RIGHT) is pictured with friend and fellow Model Arab League participant Jese Shell. Lacrosse, Sigma Zeta fraternity, Amnesty International, International Club, Model Arab League, Men of Excellence and boxing. The business marketing and political science major from Westlake, Ohio, benefitted from each of those activities and those organizations were made better by his presence. "Favorite memories include working my up as a freshman to becoming a starter on the lacrosse team," he said. "Also, I met amazing friends from around the globe while at WC. Working and traveling with Amnesty International and speaking in front of more than 200 people at the University of Milwaukee. Traveling to Morocco and Colombia." His most unexpected, yet positive, experience was when, "I (very impulsively) traveled to Colombia and lived there for five weeks. Prof. Jeff Stahley connected us with a school program there. Traveling alone in a country while speaking a foreign language is the best way to learn about yourself. I've learned, evolved and developed most from the opportunities I've dug up while being at this school, as well as learning life lessons from my professors and peers." Now that he's graduated, Michael plans to train, improve and build in sales, urban farms, secondary/tertiary languages, and martial arts. Indeed, his plate is always full! As for advice to future seniors, Michael suggests, no insists: "Examine your ambitions and desires in life. Be certain you are working towards improving your life in the way that you want to grow. We have limited time on this Earth. Also, don't take yourself so seriously!' SENIOR SALUTES are the result of Wilmington College’s graduating seniors completing an online survey requesting them to look back on their time at WC and share favorite memories, especially meaningful events/relationships and how their time at the College has impacted them.
