Wilmington College/Community Summer Theatre will present the musical, Xanadu, with four performances on July 16, 17 and 18, at 7:30 p.m., and July 19, at 2 30 p.m., in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre in WC’s Boyd Cultural Arts Center.
Xanadu is a Tony-nominated musical comedy based on the 1980 cult classic film. It follows a Greek muse who descends to 1980 Venice Beach, CA, to inspire a struggling artist. Featuring a book by Douglas Carter-Beane and music by Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) and John Farrar, the musical incorporates songs from the original film’s soundtrack. It includes hits by ELO and Olivia Newton-John, such as “Strange Magic,” “Evil Woman,” “Magic,” “All Over the World” and the title song, “Xanadu.”
Bryan Wallingford is directing the show with musical direction from Timothy Larrick, choreography by Tricia Heys, scenic design by Jessica Yankel, lighting by Becky Haines and Sterling Goodwin, costumes by Tara Lydy and scenic construction by Linda Mead. Xanadu is designed to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.
The cast features Clio played by Carlie McCoy, Sonny by Tadeo Palafox. Danny by Teddy Murphy III, Melpomene by Cherie Cooper-Darragh, Calliope by Jessica Yankel, Thalia by Lindsay Lydy, Euterpe by Molly Ross, Erato by Emma Schnecker and Terpsichore by Maggie Cooper. The ensemble includes Vanessa Calderone, Veronica Calderone, Collin Chiarini, Jessica Fair, Cecelia Hunt, Carissa Preston, Luke Ruther, Tonja Ruther, Devon Snyder, Nathan Sorn, Marta Wilkinson and Holden Wulff.
