Animated Video Designed to Assist Students Experiencing Difficulties

"We're with you all the way from 'App to Cap'" Wilmington College believes animated film can offer an effective means for conveying information to students. An animated video debuted this week that emphasizes there are staff members who can help them work through any problems they might be experiencing. PICTURED: An animated Tammi Carpenter takes students "navigate the sometimes complex journey in higher education.” Tammi Carpenter was promoted last year to associate director of enrollment success. A pleasant and engaging person in real life, those attributes come through as the cartoon character, Tammi, emphasizes in the video that there are people at WC who can “help them navigate the sometimes complex journey in higher education.” Carpenter is a native of Clinton County with two children attending local schools. Students might be experiencing any number of issues causing them anxiety and even feelings of wanting to leave the College: academic pressure, financial concerns, social isolation and not feeling like they belong. She emphasized that there are resources at the College ready to help them, but many students are unaware of where to go for help — or where to start. They can start by meeting with Carpenter at her office at 101B College Hall. She will be an advocate for students from application to graduation — “app to cap” and anywhere in between. For issues students might encounter that she cannot solve herself, Carpenter will know whom the student should see in order to receive the best advice and direction in order for them to get on the track for success at WC. Carpenter’s message — in her real voice — that resonates throughout the animation is: “We care about you and want you to succeed. We are here to help.” The animated video and Carpenter’s work in the enrollment success area complement the College’s Title III retention initiative, which provides support for at-risk students with an emphasis placed upon retaining them through graduation. WC is in the midst of implementing a retention strategy funded by a five-year $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education. The “app to cap” video is available on WC’s website on the “Current Students” page at: www.wilmington.edu/app2cap/. Students in the first year experience courses will see the presentation in class.
