Spring Semester Course to Offer Overseas Field Experience Opportunities

Spring Trips to Germany/France/Switzerland, England, Italy,Costa Rica and Cuba Offered for Academic Credit Visiting other countries is a powerful way to build the global competencies that are in demand in the workplace, so in Spring 2016, for the first time, students will be able to enroll in sections of the required Junior/Senior Global Seminar (GL425) that include an overseas field study opportunity. (LEFT) Wilmington students, faculty, staff and community members listen to a guide speaking about an ancient Greek amphitheater during a WC trip to Greece last March. Kendra Cipollini, associate professor of biology, will be teaching “Ecological Sustainability,” a course that includes an optional spring break trip to Germany, France, and Switzerland. “Europe and Germany in particular are currently leading the way when it comes to sustainability,” Cipollini says, and students will be able to study ecological issues while building global awareness among “medieval cities and majestic mountains.” Also heading to Europe for spring break will be associate professor of agriculture Tom Stilwell’s class on “English Agriculture.” While being based at the University of Reading, west of London, students will visit farms and learn about “current and past farming practices and how they have been affected by political, economic, natural, and historic factors,” Stilwell says. Upon their return to campus, the class will compare British and US agricultural practices. Students in Jim Fitzsimmons, professor of mathematics, and associate professor of business Angela Mitchell’s team-taught seminar, “Rome in War and Peace, Past and Present,” will spend their spring break in Italy, visiting Rome, the Vatican City, Florence, and Pisa in order to gain a deeper understanding of the influence of the Romans have had on issues relating to war and peace. It is possible for students not yet eligible for GL425 to participate in the trips to Germany or Italy by registering instead for a travel course for global module credit. For those students who are unable to participate in an overseas experience, the spring schedule offers a variety of seminar topics that do not involve travel. Descriptions of all GL425 sections are available at https://www.wilmington.edu/academics/global-education/ Also, a spring break trip to Costa Rica, May study tour to Cuba and summer excursion to India are available for academic credit on an individual basis rather than through GL425. Those respective trip advisers are Corey Cockerill, associate professor of communications and agriculture; and Michael Snarr, professor of political science; and Savith Krishna, assistant professor of biology. Community members interested in finding out whether space will be available for them to join a trip should contact the faculty member teaching the class 937.382.6661.
