College Recognizes ‘Best and Brightest’ with Academic and Leadership Awards

34th annual Student Honors Convocation a Highlight of the Academic Year Wilmington College presented its top academic awards and student leadership recognition Sunday (April 19) at the 34th annual Student Honors Convocation. Dr. Erika Goodwin, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty, described the ceremony as a highlight of the year when “we recognize Wilmington College’s best and brightest, students truly living the mission and core values of the College.” (LEFT) President Jim Reynolds presents Timothy Wiederhold with the 2015 Robert E. Lucas Award. Senior Timothy Wiederhold received the Robert E. Lucas Award that recognizes graduating senior that is “respected by the entire College community, has a dynamic and optimistic personality, and has made a significant contribution to the campus.” In presenting the award, President Jim Reynolds said Wiederhold has “literally done it all” during his four years at WC as he is not only an excellent student — as evidenced by his receiving the top student in educational studies award — but also one that has been actively involved as a Student Ambassador, fraternity president, student-athlete and theatre participant. “He’s the kind of person we’d all want as a friend and colleague,” he said. “Each interaction I’ve had with him has made me better at my job — he’s made a genuine difference in my life.” Other Student Life awards included Chelsea Simpson being this year’ Charles J. Ping Award recipient, which honors leadership and contributions to community service or service learning, and the Nedra Gordon Scholarship, a social awareness award that went to Alisa Turner. The academic awards for agriculture were received by Rachel McClish for agribusiness, Jonell Winger for agronomy and Jillian Duehren for equine studies. Caitlin Schafer was named the top student in biology. Mason Dickerson took home the award for accounting while Gary Smith was honored for business administration. Mathematics awards went to Kerrie Roades as the top student while Jessica Stewart earned the Addison Scholarship and Corey Walker the Martha Haines Scholarship. In education, besides Wiederhold’s award, Jenny Geers was selected the top student in early childhood education, Jamie Crane for middle childhood, Jennifer Rineair for adolescent/young adult and Erin Wollett for vocational agriculture. In the humanities, Kevin Louderback was selected as the top student in English while Jennifer Spaeth-Mullis received the award for history, Kevin Courtright for religion and philosophy, and Kasey Stewart Stanfill for Spanish. For the social sciences area, Jessica Clutter received the top student award for criminal justice while Courtney Covert was selected for psychology’s Bachelor of Arts and Erin Reynolds for psychology’s Bachelor of Science. Erin Short took the award for social and political studies, and Brianna Knisely for sustainable development. In sport sciences, Joey Brown was named top student in athletic training while Courtney Bridgewater received the award for sport management’s administration area and Courtney Tucker for its wellness concentration. Alexander Koyfis received the Dr. Elizabeth S. Kinzig Award. The new members in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, which recognizes scholarship of 2.75 or better, along with leadership and/or service, were: Tyler Ahle, Charles Anderson, Justin Arehart, Rachel Beck, Sara Bishop, Paula Bravo Jimenez, Joseph Brown, Kevin Carr, Breanna Cloutier, Jessica Clutter, Josiah Collett, Kevin Courtright.
