Tom Stilwell was born in Ohio but has spent most of his professional career as an agronomist in Latin America, Asia and Africa. Countries where he has lived include Mexico, Germany, India, Ecuador, Bolivia, Tunisia, and Cameroon. In addition to on-farm experiments, he has experience in project administration, computer applications and agricultural extension under USAID, CIMMYT, IITA, ICARDA, and CIDA. Since 2001 he has been teaching various agriculture courses at Wilmington College with occasional breaks for consulting in the Dominican Republic and conducting student study trips to South America and the Caribbean. Active languages include English, Spanish, and French.
He received his MSc. and PhD. from Ohio State University after serving in Peace Corps in India. Field work for his Master’s degree was done while enrolled as a student at Punjab Agricultural University in India.
In addition to numerous extension publications in English, Spanish, and French he has co-authored a textbook on World Food production with Dr. Alfred Conklin.
Dr. Stilwell is a member of the American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America and the Crop Science Society of America. He is a member of the board of directors for Quaker/Bolivia Link, a charity focusing on village water projects in the Altiplano.
Off campus study experiences
In 2013 Dr. Stilwell conducted a student trip to Bolivia and Peru to study Andean Agriculture. In 2014 he also conducted a student trip to Dominica with the theme of Island Agriculture. He frequently travels with students to annual meetings of the American Society of Agronomy.
Favorite hobbies/activities (if any)
Coin collecting and woodworking.
