Winter Holiday Choral Concert Planned for Sunday

The Wilmington College Music Department will present its annual Winter Choral Concert, Sunday (Dec. 7), at 7:30 p.m., in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre featuring the College Chorale and the College/Community Chorus in an evening of seasonal choral music. The Chorale will open the concert by performing music for the Christmas season including "Carol of the Birds" arranged by Courtney, "The First Nowell" by Forrest, "In the Bleak Midwinter" by Farnell, and "Kling, Glocken, Kling" by Sieving. The Chorale features Alena Moore, Amanda Allen, Brandi James, Jess Bennett and Caitlin Schafer and is under the direction of David White, adjunct instructor of music. Following a brief intermission, the College/Community Chorus will present a thematic program titled “Carols of Peace in a Time of War.” The selections represent Christmas music from several of the combatant countries in World War I. Pieces include “He Is Born the Divine Christ Child” by John Leavitt, “Silent Night” by Franz Gruber and arranged by Darmon Meader, “The Wexford Carol” by Howard Helvey, “The Christ-Child’s Lullaby” by Wayland Rogers, “Baloo Lammy” by Ruth Morris Gray, “See, Amid the Winter’s Snow” by Lloyd Larson, “Gesu Bambino” by Pietro A. Yon, and “Born in Bethlehem,” which features a combination of two African American carols arranged by Mary McDonald. Featured soloists are: Gwen Bogan, Amy Crawford, Debbie Hess, Miriam Speaight, Lori Ann Scott, Terri Valentine and Gene Ford. College/Community Chorus is directed by Elizabeth Haskins and accompanied by Ellen Clapp. The concert concludes with the combined ensembles singing “Still, Still, Still” by Mark Wilberg and “Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day” by Howard Helvey. Both pieces are written for mixed chorus and piano 4-hands. The event is free of charge.
