PICTURED: Bud Lewis presents the newly named "Bud Lewis Outstanding Greek Senior-of-the-Year Award" to Ashley Wilson of DTS Lil Sis. That especially impressive side of Greek life was celebrated April 26 at the annual Grek Awards Program along with accomplishments of WC’s 13 fraternities and sororities, and its members, which constitute some 25 percent of the College’s main campus enrollment. WC’s sororities include Alpha Phi Kappa, Delta Omega Theta, DTS Lil Sis, Kappa Delta, Phi Alpha Psi Sweethearts, Psi Beta Omega and the two newest, Sigma Alpha and Sigma Gamma Rho. The fraternities include Sigma Zeta, Tau Kappa Beta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta and Delta Theta Sigma. Three organizations, Tau Kappa Beta, DTS Lil Sis and Kappa Delta earned the distinction as Greek Life “Organizations-of-the-Year,” and Ashley Wilson of DTS Lil Sis received the newly named “Bud Lewis Senior-of-the-Year Award.” Lewis, the long-time director of Greek Life who retired from full-time work at WC in December, was honored for his years of service. Other seniors honored were: Kelsey Young, Alpha Phi Kappa; Emily Watton, Delta Omega Theta; Trent Czartoski, Delta Theta Sigma; Maraya Wahl, Kappa Delta; Mathew Hursey, Lambda Chi Alpha; Nicole Northern, Phi Alpha Psi Sweethearts; Chelsea Toland, Psi Beta Omega; Mathew Perry, Sigma Zeta, Ilesha White, Sigma Gamma Rho; and Kyle Arcaro, Tau Kappa Beta. Based on a fairly objective system for evaluating certain criteria, the College designates Greek organizations for accomplishment and excellence with Silver, Gold and Green-and-White standards. The most prestigious is Green-and-White, which was presented to Alpha Phi Kappa, DTS Lil Sis, Kappa Delta, Psi Beta Omega and Tau Kappa Beta, followed by the Gold Standard to Delta Theta Sigma and Lambda Chi Alpha, and the Silver Standard to Delta Omega Theta, Sigma Alpha, Sigma Gamma Rho and Sigma Zeta. Sigma Zeta’s Mathew Perry garnered the “Outstanding Greek Council Service Award” and Brandin Williams-Johnson, of Lambda Chi Alpha received the “Outstanding Greek Athlete Award” as a stand-out member of the College’s cheer squad. Faculty/staff members Michelle Montgomery and Chad McKay received “Greek Adviser-of-the-Year” awards for their work with Alpha Phi Kappa and Sigma Alpha sororities, respectively. Dorothy Gurtzweiler and Tim Hawk, who are retiring, earned special recognition for her 20 years advising the Omegas and his 25 years with TKB. DTS Lil Sis was recognized for leading the way by giving 1,378 hours of service (95 hours a member) and for raising $5,228 ($360 a member). Academics also were recognized as Kappa Delta (3.41 GPA) and Lambda Chi Alpha (2.84 GPA) posted the highest average for spring 2017 and repeated for fall 2017 with Kappa Delta achieving a 3.47 GPA and Lambda Chi Alpha a 3.27 GPA. Twenty-seven students in Greek Life earned a 4.0 GPA during the spring and fall 2017 semesters while 86 made the Dean’s list with between a 3.5 and 3.99 GPA for spring and fall 2017. Organizations earning a 3.0 GPA or higher for either spring 2017 or fall 2017, or both, were the Delts, DTS Lil Sis, KD, Sweethearts, Omega, Kappas and Lambda Chi. Each of these organizations also received “Greek Excellence Academic Honor Awards” for having a GPA above the non-Greek gender average. Greek Excellence in Service Awards went to six organizations who averaged at least 25 hours of service per member. They are: Alpha Phi Kappa, DTS Lil Sis, Kappa Delta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Psi Beta Omega and Tau Kappa Beta. Finally, those organizations that brought in 10 or more new members during the spring and fall 2017 semesters were FarmHouse, Kappa Delta, Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Alpha.
