Greeks Culminate Year with Awards Ceremony

Greeks Generate 8,755 Volunteer Hours and $14,236 in Philanthropy Bud Lewis proclaimed 2016-17 a banner year for Greek Life at Wilmington College and, with nearly 9,000 volunteer hours and $14,000-plus in philanthropic dollars raised, who could disagree? You served a tremendous amount of needs in the community,” said Lewis, director of Greek Life and wellness. He noted that WC’s fraternities and sororities grew by 77 new members, which bolstered the total number of Greeks to more than 200 this spring semester. Tau Kappa Beta fraternity and Kappa Delta and Delta Omega Theta sororities were selected for Greek Organizations of the Year awards, while Kyle Bell of Lambda Chi Alpha and Kylie Walker of Delta Omega Theta received Greek Life’s Senior-of-the-Year awards. Kylie Walker also received the Greek Council Service Award while Elyse Spraul of Kappa Delta received the Outstanding Greek Athlete Award and the Omega’s adviser, Dorothy Gurtzweiler, won Adviser –of-the-Year. Sigma Zeta and the Delts were crowned Greek Games Champions. Particularly impressive is the large number of Greek organizations that attained the highest level in a points-based evaluation system. Earning the highest Greek Excellence Standards Awards with Green-and-White status were: the Kappas, DTS Lil Sis, Delts, KDs, Lambda Chi Alpha, Sweethearts, Sigma Zeta and TKB, followed by Silver Level — Delta Theta Sigma and the Omegas; and Bronze — the Iotas. Greek Excellence Service Awards (minimum 25 hours per member average) — Alpha Phi Kappa, Delta Omega Theta, DTS Lil Sis, Kappa Delta, Phi Alpha Psi Sweethearts, Psi Beta Omega, Iota Phi Theta and Tau Kappa Beta. The Philanthropy Award (minimum $50 per member average) — Kappas, Delts, DTS Lil Sis, Kappa Delta, Sweethearts and Iotas. For service, DTS Lil Sis volunteered for 1,697 hours and TKB volunteered for 359 hours, while, for philanthropy, the DTS Lil Sis raised $5,787 and Sweethearts raised $2,034. Other awards included: New Member Award for 10 or more new members — Alpha Phi Kappa and Kappa Delta; Academic Honor Award (semester GPA above WC’s gender average) — Spring 2016: Kappa Delta and Lambda Chi Alpha and Fall 2016: Delts, KDs, Lambda Chi Alpha, Omegas and TKB; Greek Organization Scholarship Awards (semester GPA at or above 3.0) — Spring 2016: Delts, KDs, DTS Lil Sis, Lambda Chi Alpha and Sweethearts and Fall 2016: Delts, DTS Lil Sis, KDs, Lambda Chi and Omegas. Greek organization members earning Dean’s List status were individually recognized. Also, the Greek Life Highest GPA Awards for spring 2016 and fall 2016 went to KDs (3.28/3.44) and Lambda Chi (3.10/3.04).
