Also, the newly formed horse judging team is competing in its first-ever intercollegiate event Oct. 14 at the American Quarter Horse Assn. Congress in Columbus. Other competitors include teams from Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and New Mexico State universities. Bethany Siehr, assistant professor of equine business management, said students that compete in intercollegiate judging competitions are expected to place up to 12 separate classes of four horses with each class requiring different criteria. Then, at the end of the day, they will defend, before a panel of judges, their reasoning — from memory — for placing specific competitors. “Oral reasoning is judged on accuracy, delivery, professionalism and the correct use of terms,” Siehr said. Judging team members are Sam Shuler, Jensen Pierson, Katie Dowdy and Kalynn Gullium.
