College-Community Chorus Opens Ranks to New Members

Fall Semester Rehearsals Being Held In Preparation for Winter Holiday Concert The Wilmington College-Community Chorus is gearing up for its fall semester activities that culminate with the annual Winter Holiday Concert in December. (LEFT) Members of the College-Community Chorus perform in April at the annual Spring Concert. Long-time director Elizabeth Haskins encourages area residents that can carry a tune to considering joining the chorus. Rehearsals are Monday evenings, from 7 to 9 p.m., in Room 208 of the Boyd Cultural Arts Center. The first regular rehearsal is scheduled for Sept. 14. Members registered for one hour of academic credit will gather for an organizational meeting on Monday (Aug. 24). Singers, high school age and older with choral or solo vocal experience, are encouraged to participate in College-Community Chorus. New members need not audition for chorus membership, however solo and small ensemble opportunities are available by audition only. Music and folders will be provided. Further information is available by contacting Haskins at (937) 481-2334 or via email at: haskinea@wilmington.edu. This term the chorus will prepare a program titled “Summer and Winter; The Seasons of Christmas,” which will be performed at WC’s Winter Holiday Concert Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m., in Hugh Heiland Theatre, Boyd Cultural Arts Center. The repertoire represents Christmas music from the northern and southern hemispheres. It includes selections from Five Christmas Carols by the Australian composer William Graham James; “Beautiful the Sky,” a collection of four Scandinavian carols arranged by Paul J. Christiansen and edited by Erik Christiansen; “African Noel” by Ken Berg; “Huron Carol,” arranged by Mark Burrows; and “Los Pastores” from Navidad Nuestra by Ariel Ramirez. “Haskins said “these beautiful carols” introduce members to unfamiliar Christmas musical traditions, in addition to offering solo opportunities and utilizing various instruments in addition to the piano.
