Campus Mourns Loss of Freshman Student-Athlete

Lauryn A. Griewahn Passes Away after Extended Illness As word spread through campus this weekend, members of the Wilmington College community were saddened to learn that one of its students, Lauryn A. Griewahn, passed away Sunday (April 22) following an extended illness. Griewahn, a freshman from Adrian, Mich., majoring in exercise science, had been attending classes as recently as late March when complications from her bout with Lupus, a disease that affects the immune system, resulted in her health taking a turn for the worse. She was a member of the Fightin’ Quakers volleyball team. President Jim Reynolds said WC is a “close-knit campus” and losing a young person as bright and promising as Griewahn is difficult to accept. “Let’s remember the joy and sense of purpose she shared with us during her all-too-brief time on our campus,” he said. “Our heart goes out to Lauryn’s family and friends.” Dr. Terry Rupert, vice president for athletic administration, also chose to remember Griewahn as one whose time at Wilmington College will be remembered for the positive effect she had on others and her tenacity both on the volleyball court and in the face of health issues. “The WC athletics family shares in this terrible loss with Lauren’s family and friends, to whom we send our sincere condolences.” Volleyball Coach Timothy O’Brien praised her perseverance in the face of adversity, adding that she was doing homework in the hospital as late as Tuesday. “She was a hard-working kid in battling this illness in addition to being a small (5-3) setter playing six rotations. It’s a challenging thing to do, but Lauryn was up to the challenge,” said O’Brien, who played volleyball and worked in her hometown of Adrian, adding he knew her for the past six years. “Lauryn will be sorely missed by her teammates and coaches,” he said. “She will continue as an inspiration as our volleyball program moves forward.” Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 27, 2018, at Wagley Funeral Home in Adrian with the Rev. Gary Miller officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. View the obituary at: http://www.wagleyfuneralhomes.com/obituaries/Lauryn-Griewahn/#!/Obituary
