From MLK to BLM: African American Political Literature (Topics in Lit. of Race/Gender/Ethnicity)

This course explores African-American political literature from the civil rights movement to the present, beginning with Martin Luther King’s less commonly taught writings, moving through the work of Malcolm X, Assata Shakur, and LeRoi Jones/Amiri Barka in the Black Power movement, Toni Morrison and Anna Deveare Smith in the 1990s, Barack Obama in the 2000s, and Ta-Nahisi Coates, among others, in the 2010s. We will think about the language, strategy, and tactics of black liberation since 1950.
