ALLIANCE — Wilmington College was edged by Mount Union, 5-3, in quarterfinal round action of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Quakers season ends at 6-10 while Mount Union takes a 15-5 mark to the semifinals.

“I am proud of this team,” Wilmington head coach Jessie Loeffelholz said. “We played well this season and we played well today."

Wilmington, the No. 6 seed, jumped out to a 2-1 lead over the No. 3 seed Purple Raiders with a pair of doubles wins.

Jessica VanWinkle (Vickery/Floyd Central, Ind.) and Stephanie Amrhein (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) posted an 8-4 win over Tara Biedenbach and Courtney Adamsky at No. 2. At the No. 3 position, Jessica Veite (Loveland) and Michelle Reiber (Jamestown/Greeneview) were 8-1 winners over Elyse Underwood and Mari Miki.

“Our doubles teams played solid matches,” Loeffeholz said. “They put us in very good position to win the match.”

Mount Union bounced back to win four singles matches.

Wilmington’s lone singles win was provided by Veite, who breezed past Biedenbach, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4.

“Jessica Veite had a great match,” Loeffelholz said. “She is very consistent. She does a great job of keeping the ball in play and forcing her opponent to make shots.”

For Wilmington, the season ends, but optimism is growing.

“We had a great season,” Loeffelholz said. “This team really proved that it can play with the best in our conference. I am looking forward to what this team can accomplish next season.”
