UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The Wilmington College softball team was swept in a doubleheader for just the second time this season, falling to John Carroll Saturday, 2-0 and 6-4.

“We didn’t play well today,” said head coach Beth Floyd. “We came out and just didn’t play a strong first game despite getting a solid pitching performance. I thought our energy was better in the second game.”

Wilmington falls to 16-6 overall, 2-4 in the OAC, and is slated to return to the diamond 3 p.m. Tuesday against Otterbein.

Playing without senior shortstop Brooke Byrne (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington), the Lady Quakers mustered just two hits in the opener. Junior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) led the game off with a single and junior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) started the second off with a double.

John Carroll scored a run in the first and an unearned run in the second to complete the scoring output.

Junior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) fell to 7-2 on the season, allowing two runs (one earned) with seven hits over six innings.

Junior Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) was responsible for all four runs in the second game with a solo home run in the second and a three-run blast in the fifth. The Lady Quakers had a chance in the seventh inning as Shilling was issued a two-out walk. Lee followed with a single put the tying run on base. However, freshman Megan Rachford (Germantown, OH/Valley View) popped up to end the threat.

“Catlin hit the ball well today and came up big at the plate,” said Floyd. “We were able to get runners on base, we just couldn’t get them in. In the game of softball, you have to get that timely hit.”

The Lady Quakers managed eight hits on the game with seven different players getting into the act.

Sophomore Jess Clutter (Englewood, OH/Northmont) took the loss to fall to 5-4 on the season, allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.
