CINCINNATI, OH – It didn’t take long for the 2012 edition of the Wilmington College women’s soccer team to etch their name in the WC record books.

Just six matches into the season, the Fightin’ Quakers tied a WC modern record for the most shutouts in a season with six as they posted a 2-0 non-conference victory over the College of Mount St. Joseph Thursday at Schueler Field.

“It’s good team defense,” said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. “It’s not just our defenders. The forward, midfielder and defenders allow us to keep it out of our zone.”

After launching a barrage of shots at the MSJ goal in the first half, and coming up empty, it didn’t take WC long in the second half for the Quakers to bear the fruits of their labor. In the 47th minute, less than two minutes into the second half, freshman Lauren Lewis (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) broke a scoreless tie on Wilmington’s 12th shot on goal in the game – its 16th shot of the game.

Junior Lauren Price (Xenia, OH/Waynesville) was credited with her first assist of the season.

“I told the team at halftime that we were creating good opportunities, we just had to have composure in the front of the net,” said Spirk.

Freshman Liz Elson (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) added an insurance goal in the 77th minute, scoring her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Freshman Sarah Stauffer (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) claimed her third victory of the season, making two saves – both in the first half.

The Fightin' Quakers finished the game with 30 shots, 22 of which were on goal, in posting the victory.

Wilmington (5-0-1) will travel to Bluffton noon Saturday in non-conference action.
