Senior Brianna Peters was named to the All-Tournament as Wilmington defeated Saint Vincent to earn the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament championship.

WILMINGTON – The Wilmington College women’s basketball team shot 47.5 percent from the field en route to claiming the 2012 Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament with a 69-60 victory over Saint Vincent Sunday at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court.

“Today’s game was, by far, our best performance of the season,” said Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve. “Saint Vincent is a quality basketball team. We had a game plan, and we executed very well.”

Four players, led by sophomore Spencer Robles (Clyde, OH/Clyde), reached double figures in posting the win. Robles scored 11 points as senior LeAnn Topp (New Bremen, OH/New Bremen), senior Brianna Peters (Alexandria, KY/Campbell County) and junior Haley Howard (Uhrichsville, OH/New Philadephia) all added 10 points for Wilmington.

Topp earned Most Valuable Player honors mostly for her contributions on the defensive end. One day after recorded a career-high 15 rebounds, the senior forward limited the Bearcats’ leading scorer Devin McGrath to just two points on 1-of-7 shooting. She was joined on the All-Tournament team by Peters and Howard.

“LeAnn is our leader on and off the court,” said Scheve. “Two days ago, she changed positions and didn’t complain. She played very well this weekend.”

Saint Vincent seemed to have all of the answers in the first half, mostly coming from beyond the arc. The Bearcats led for the most of the first 17 minutes and all three times Wilmington pulled even, SVC nailed a three-pointer to give them space.

Junior Makenzie Wippel (Orient, OH/Westfall) keyed a 10-0 run to close to first half giving Wilmington a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Wippel scored six of the 10 points, including a basket to close the half that gave the Lady Quakers a seven-point edge.

Wilmington built its lead to as much as 15 in the second half, but the visiting Bearcats couldn’t pull closer than a two-possession deficit.

The Lady Quakers (3-2) will travel to Cincinnati Wednesday to play the College of Mount St. Joseph in non-conference action.
