House Mortgage Burned at Founders’ Night

Retirement of Mortgage a Testament ot Alumni Support of Fraternity

June 17, 2007

Founders’ Night 2007 held additional meaning this year as the Sigma Zeta Alumni Association burned the mortgage for the Sig House.

It’s a testament to the commitment of Sig alumni that the mortgage could be retired so quickly after the house was refinanced for $20,000 some four years ago. In fact, before the last Hundred Club newsletter hit the streets in last January, we still owed nearly $7,300.

In that 10-week period of time between the newsletter and Founders on March 31, Sig alumni gave gifts covering the balance of the mortgage.

At Founders’ Night, actives sold raffle tickets giving the winner the opportunity to ignite the mortgage document. Robert Bruns, Class of  ’61, struck the match while Chris Case ’93 and Rich Rhoads ’89, the Hundred Club treasurer and president, respectively, assisted in keeping the Elks Lodge from going up in flames.

Special thanks goes to Rich for his assuming the financial risk of the refinanced mortgage and to Chris for his service as treasurer for the past seven years. Chris was recognized at Founders’ as he stepped down as Hundred Club/Alumni Association treasurer.
Antonio “Tony” Mitchell ’98 has agreed to take over the position.

Some 75 Sigma Zeta alumni participated in Founders’ Weekend, which included an informal Friday evening gathering at BW-3 for early arrivers, golf Saturday morning, a cookout lunch at the Sig House, the Founders’ banquet and party Saturday night.

At the banquet, Herman Fisher ’51 was presented the Active Chapter’s “Alumni Service Award” for his long-time support and for spearheading a mini-fundraising campaign in 2005-06 in which alumni from his era gave toward paying off the mortgage.

He was presented a Sigma Zeta paddle as an award and, coincidentally, he gave the active chapter his paddle from his Sig days in the late 40s/early 50s.

(Anyone with such Sig memorabilia they might consider parting with is encouraged to give it to the Active Chapter for its display cases. Please send to Randy Sarvis, adviser, c/o Wilmington College, 1870 Quaker Way, Wilmington, OH 45177)
