Greetings from the Peace Resource Center! First, let me introduce myself. My name is Michael Snarr and I am a political scientist here at Wilmington College. As the Interim Director of the Peace Resource Center (PRC), I am filling in for Jim Boland, the Director, while he is on sabbatical.

Instead of the usual newsletter we have decided it is a good time to update our readership and determine what aspects of the newsletter are most important to you, and what things you might want to see in future newsletters. We also want to determine who no longer wishes to receive the PRC newsletter.

First, however, I would like to mention a few of the exciting events that have happened at the PRC over the past few months. To mark the 3rd anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the PRC, along with the Quaker Heritage Center sponsored a veteran’s panel. The panel featured five veterans of the current war who either attend Wilmington College or have a close tie with it. More than 80 people attended. I, along with many other participants, was surprised to hear their relatively negative view of the war. Some of the veteran’s felt they were not given proper training prior to being deployed, while some believed the Bush Administration was not being upfront with the people and military regarding the war objectives. None of the panelists believed there was much hope for a good ending to the war.

The PRC also hosted several visitors and a couple speakers. The speakers spoke to groups on issues such as the U.S.-Mexican immigration issue and ethics in business.

Despite being on sabbatical, Jim Boland has continued his work with Positive Discipline and ProjectTRUST. In recent weeks, he has facilitated ProjectTRUST workshops with Wilmington Middle School and Clinton Massie Middle School. Jim is currently working with the Ohio Commission on Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management to teach Positive Discipline strategies to 50 middle schools in Ohio. The schools will be studied afterwards and if the results are good there is the possibility that the training will be replicated nationally.

In closing, I would like to say thanks to Charlotte Pack and the student workers at the PRC—Myriam Benalcazar, Cindi Drerup, Bri Rogers, and Paige Stumpf—as they have made it enjoyable to work here. When you receive your next newsletter, Jim will be back as PRC Director. In the meantime, have a wonderful summer and please take a moment to fill out the survey and return it to the PRC.
