Chase is a senior from Williamsburg majoring in mathematics education and Walker is a senior mathematics education major from Hillsboro. Chase, a 2013 graduate of Williamsburg High School, will receive the Martha Haines Memorial Scholarship awarded each year to an outstanding student majoring in education who is training to be a high school mathematics teacher. Dr. William Kincaid, professor of mathematics, said Martha Haines spent her career teaching middle school mathematics students in the area and it was her wish that this scholarship be established as an award for prospective mathematics teachers who have shown outstanding ability in mathematics and the desire to share this knowledge with others. “Rebecca’s intense desire to learn and share with other students and the tutoring she has done make her an outstanding candidate for this award,” he said. Walker, a graduate of Hillsboro High School and the recipient of last year’s Martha Haines Scholarship, will receive the Laurence and Ruby Adamson Memorial Scholarship. Kincaid explained the Adamsons had limited formal education but recognized the value a dedicated student can receive through education. This scholarship was established to recognize students who value their own education. “Corey’s work ethic is extremely strong,” Kincaid said, noting he even audited the Abstract Algebra course a year after he had earned a strong grade in the course simply to gain additional knowledge in the subject. “As a tutor in the WC Math Center, Corey has contributed much of his time and expertise over the last two years to struggling students.”
