Wilmington opens season with win over Franklin
September 2, 2012
TERRE HAUTE, IN - The Wilmington College women's soccer team opened the 2012 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Franklin in the first game of the Rose-Hulman Invitational Saturday.
Junior Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) got Wilmington on the board with a penalty kick in the 28th minute. While Gutowski tallied the lone goal until junior Jenni Marck (Cincinnati/Wyoming) in the 72nd minute, the Fightin' Quakers kept the pressure on with 20 shots.
The offensive pressure really allowed the WC defense to stay relatively untested as freshman Sarah Stauffer (Beavercreek/Beavercreek) tallied four saves in recording the shutout.
Wilmington (1-0) will face host Rose-Hulman 2 p.m. Sunday.
