ADA — Wilmington College was swept by Ohio Northern University in Ohio Athletic Conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon.

The Polar Bears rallied to take game one, 5-2, and finished the sweep with a 12-3 win in the nightcap.

Wilmington is now 3-9 in the OAC, 6-19 overall. Ohio Northern moves to 4-7 in the conference, 10-18 for the season.

The Quakers did their offensive damage in the fourth inning with an RBI double off the bat of Andrew Snell (Jamestown/Greeneview) and a run-scoring single from Brett McEvoy (Pickerington/Pickerington North).

Wilmington’s 2-1 lead held until the Polar Bears plated a run in the fifth inning. Ohio Northern took a 5-2 lead with three more runs in the home sixth.

Snell, McEvoy and Austin Newman (Bethel/Bethel-Tate) had two hits apiece.

Hunter Justus (Circleville/Logan Elm) pitched well in a losing effort.

“Hunter is the type of player who wants the ball. He shows up early and wants to play and wants to win. He went out and competed today. We just didn’t get big hits to support him. We got them on and got them over, but we couldn’t get them in,” Wilmington head coach Tony Haley said.

Game two offered little drama.

Ohio Northern put two runs on the board in the first and expanded its lead to 6-0 with four more in the third.

Bruce Dunlap (Circleville) ripped an RBI single in the third inning, and the Quakers added two more runs in the ninth.

Snell capped a five-hit day with three hits in four at-bats.

“Andrew had a big day today. Even the outs he made were hard-hit balls,” Haley said. “He got the start at third base, and he did a great job. He made some nice plays. It was nice to see him come out and make his bid to stay in the lineup.”
