Wilmington falls to JCU in finale
October 28, 2012
WILMINGTON – There were plenty of chances for the Wilmington College men’s soccer team Saturday, but unfortunately they didn’t convert on enough as they fell to John Carroll, 2-1, at Charlie Gilhart Field.
The loss, the Quakers’ second straight, drops them to the third seed in the upcoming Ohio Athletic Conference tournament. Wilmington will face sixth seed Baldwin-Wallace Tuesday. WC defeated the Yellow Jackets, 3-1, on October 13. A win over BW will set up a rematch with the Blue Streaks in the OAC semifinals.
John Carroll dominated the opening parts of the game, and its work finally paid off with a goal in the 14th minute.
“Without a doubt they are the best aside from Ohio Northern we have seen this year,” said head coach Bud Lewis. “In the first 20 minutes, it took us a while to figure out what we needed to do. But our kids responded well and we found ourselves back in the game with a goal. At that point, I thought the game would come down who executed.”
The game winner came in the 74th minute as the WC defense had a breakdown following a free kick. The Quakers defended the initial attempt, but a miscommunication near the goal allowed the winner to find the back of the net.
Freshman Cody Sabins (Marysvile, OH/Marysville) tallied Wilmington’s only goal, scoring in the 33rd minute. The assist was credited to junior Henrik Hornaess (Brumunddal, Norway/Hamar Katerdralskole).
