Austin Newman ripped two doubles in Wilmington's doubleheader with Muskingum.
NEW CONCORD — Wilmington College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Muskingum University Tuesday afternoon.
The Muskies took game one, 11-2, and finished the sweep with a 6-1 win in game two.
Wilmington is now 0-4 in the OAC, 3-14 overall. Muskingum moves to 3-1 in the conference, 9-10 for the season.
The Quakers’ offense produced just 10 hits on the day.
“We played good baseball today and we saw some really good pitching,” Wilmington head coach Tony Haley said. “We played really good defense, got good pitching, but we just couldn’t get anything going against their pitching.”
Big innings were the nemesis in the opener as the Muskies scored three runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth.
Wilmington scored a run in the fourth when Austin Newman (Bethel/Bethel-Tate) doubled and came home on a balk.
The Quakers’ second run came home in the seventh, courtesy of a Brett McEvoy (Pickerington/Pickerington North) two-base hit.
In game two, Muskingum scored three in the second inning and extended its lead to 4-0 after three.
Wilmington put just two runners on base through the first five innings, but threatened in the sixth. McEvoy singled and went to third on Newman’s second double of the day and eighth of the season. But Muskingum wiggled out of the jam to maintain its four-run cushion.
The lone Wilmington run came home in the seventh. Hunter Justus (Circleville/Logan Elm) walked and later scored on a wild pitch.
Xavier Jordan (Springfied/Shawnee) had two of Wilmington’s six hits.
The Quakers will play their third straight OAC doubleheader on the road when they travel to University Heights to face John Carroll at 1 p.m. Friday.
